Advanced Training Course (ATC) Еvent “Gender Mainstreaming in Counter-terrorism Efforts in Western Balkans”– 2nd working day (17.05.2021)
The 2nd working day started with an excellent lecture by Dr. Robin May Schott, Philosopher and Researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS). During her lecture she was deconstructing the concepts of masculinity and feminity and providing feminist perspectives on peace and security. She also explained the complexities of political ambiguity of gender and violence.
The diverse approaches and experiences of integrating the gender component in security sectors in different WB countries were addressed three excellent speakers from Western Balkans:
–Ms. Ratela Asllani, Security Expert from Atlantic Council of Albania on topic: “Gender Mainstreaming in Security Sector Reform: Case of Albania”
–Dr. Ankica Tomic, Special Advisor on Gender and Equality, MARRI RC Skopje;Former Head of Department for International Cooperation, Ministry of Security (BiH) on topic: “Integrating the Gender Component in Security and Defense Structures: Challenges, Best Practices and Lessons Learnt”
–Dr. Dunja Duic, Faculty of Law, Osijek (Croatia) on topic: “Case Studies of Implementation of UNSCR 1325 in EU and Western Balkans”
Another great speaker and unique topic, Dr. Ghayda Hassan, Clinical psychologist and professor of clinical psychology at UQÀM and Director of the Canada Practitioners Network for the Prevention of Radicalization and Extremist Violence spoke on topic entitled: “Interventions with Violently Radicalized Women: Risk Evaluations and Measures for Building Resilience”. She brought forward interesting and important aspects of public health interventions with violently radicalized women. Dr. Hassan also elaborated upon the women at risk and intersectionality (intersecting opressions), as well as the four-tiered model for prevention.
Dr. Jayne Huckerby, Clinical Professor of Law; Director, International Human Rights Clinic, Duke University School of Law provided unique insights on topic entitled: “Gender and human rights-based approaches to recruitment to proscribed groups” explaining the link between the trafficking and recruitment and consequences to human rights.
The second working day of the ATC event was concluded with Mr. Gabriele Cascone, Head of the CounterTerrorism Section, NATO HQ. He provided great insights about NATO’s policies and achievements in integrating gender perspectives in Counter-Terrorism efforts.
